Windhoek, Namibia
WINDHOEK,
NAMIBIA
Windhoek is Namibia's capital
city, and its charm lies in the harmonious blend of African and European
cultures and
the friendliness of its
people. Nestling in the valley created
by the Auas Mountain to the south, the Eros Mountains to the east
and the Khomas Hochland to the west, Windhoek is a city of striking
contrasts, and is a melting pot of the many groups which make up
Namibia.
The official language is English,
but German is spoken widely in the country's main centres and commercial
farming areas. Windhoek is Namibia's economic and cultural centre.
Windhoek
is home to approximately 240,000 people, an extremely small
capital by global standards; however, the number
is growing rapidly at present
due mostly to a lack of employment in rural areas. Despite the large
increase in population over the last few years, the city centre is
extremely clean
and trouble free. Most tourists comment on the cleanliness of the city,
and often pronounce Windhoek to be a most un-African city.

Activities
Travelers typically arrive in this
friendly, relaxed city at the International Airport and overnight in
one of
the city's fine hotels before leaving on early morning charter flights
to the Namib Desert or elsewhere in Namibia. Note that most of these
charters leave from the city's second airport at Eros.
Windhoek is a pleasantly small city,
but doesn't offer a great deal for the sophisticated city lover.
However, there are some interesting
markets selling African drums and woodcarvings from the north, while
elegant shops offer quality leather goods and quality gemstones.
Windhoek is a cosmopolitan city with excellent hotels, restaurants,
shops, banks
and hospital facilities. Windhoek is an ideal centre from which to
explore the surrounding countryside. The city is also the starting
point for tours by car or aircraft to every part of the
country.
