Conservation
African Wildlife Foundation  - The African Wildlife Foundation, together with the people of Africa, works to ensure that the wildlife and wild lands of Africa will endure forever.

Children in the Wilderness  - Children in the Wilderness is an organization in Southern Africa, co-sponsored by Wilderness Safaris and founded after a safari taken by Paul Newman.   CITW is modeled after Newman's "Hole in the Wall" camps in the US.  CITW is dedicated to helping children whose childhoods have been interrupted and disrupted by life threatening conditions such as illness, poverty and the HIV/Aids epidemic. Using environmental education, therapeutic recreation and good old-fashioned fun, Children in the Wilderness opens up the minds of children, increases their self-esteem, builds and strengthen their capabilities to cope with life's challenges and educates them with the life skills necessary to actualize their greatest potential.

Safari Gear
Eagle Creek  - Superb qualitysafari duffels and gear.   We've owned ours for years and it withstands lots of abuse.   Check out our PERFECT SAFARI DUFFEL.  We offer a specially made safari duffel bag made by Eagle Creek for sale to guests or anyone looking for the perfect safari luggage.

LED Lenser Flashlights and Headlamps  - My new favorite brand for small flashlights and headlamps. Headlamps are very useful on a safari for walking to and from your tent, going to the toilet during the night or even for reading in camps without good lighting in the rooms. LED Lenser lights are amazingly bright for their size.  My personal choice are the USB/AC rechargeable headlamps.  This means no AAA batteries like other brands and the charge lasts for days with normal use.

Royal Robbins  - High quality safari clothing for both men and women.  You'll even wear this stuff at home.  Lots of choices and very fashionable too.  Highly recommended!

Magellan's  - Good selection of general travel products including travel clocks, clothing, footwear, luggage, in-flight comfort, health and toiletries, wallets, etc.  An extensive on-line catalog.  Reputable company in business since 1989.

Photographic Gear
B&H Photo-Video  - B&H have excellent pricing as they do a huge volume. James has purchased nearly every item of photographic equipment he owns from B&H over the years and has never had a single problem.  Highly recommended.  B&H will contribute a portion of the profits to Children in the Wilderness for any orders made from this link (or if you call this special B&H number: 800-309-4374).  Note that the pricing to you is the same regardless.

Green Batteries  - Excellent source for rechargeable batteries and rechargers.  James uses NiMH AA size batteries for his flashes - they are FAR better than disposables in terms of recycle time and extended life.  We use them throughout our home as well.  Be sure to purchase a battery charger (we use the POWERcharger II) and - VERY IMPORTANT, make sure to order a 220V adapter for the charger (available from Green Batteries) or you WILL fry it on first use in Southern Africa!!  If your camera does not come with a rechargeable battery, these AA rechargeables are the best.

Kinesis  - The SafariSack I™ or the NatureScapes SkimmerSack™.  Excellent bean bags for safaris.  I suggest you buy the sack empty and fill it with sand when you get to the safari camps.  I bring along gallon-size ziplock bags to fill with sand, and then put those inside the SafariSack.  If you have room you can get the bags with the filling inside.

Lowepro Bags  - The absolute best for transporting your cameras and lenses.  James has several sizes and has used them for years.

Pelican Cases  - Hard-body camera cases - very high quality.  Not cheap.  James uses a very large one when transporting his gear overseas - you can check these things in as they are pretty much impervious to damage.

Really Right Stuff  - Camera and lens quick-realease mounting plates and clamps.  Absolutely the best - I have their plates on every camera and/or lens that I own.  Allows for instant release and attachment of camera to a tripod or monopod.  Family-owned business with very friendly and helpful service.  Their equipment is manufactured with very fine tolerance levels and they make their mounting plates custom for every lens and camera out there (just about) - they fit like a glove.  Must have stuff.

SealLine® Storm Sack™ dry bags  - These bags are very useful if you are on a safari vehicle with an open roof or open sides and you are caught in heavy rainfall. The Storm Sack is completely waterproof for even the heaviest rains and if you think your bag's rain cover will work, don't be fooled.  Once water pools in the area you have your camera bag (on the seat or on the floor), these flimsy rain covers are practically useless.  The Storm Sack is totally waterproof and they have saved me every year from rains in the bush. The 60L size is perfect for large backpacks and camera bags.

Wonpro / EuroPlugs  - Great plug adapters and Universal power strips for use on safaris. The power strips accept USA plugs and can be ordered with detachable power cords so the strip can be used in any country.

Plug adapters Chart (by Country):  For a list of plug types used by country go here:  Plug Adapter Chart

Visible Dust  - Digital SLR camera sensor cleaning equipment. Your sensor will likely pick up some dust on a long safari and cleaning the sensor will make a difference later when you are processing your images!

Travel Insurance
Eyes on Africa recommends AIG Travel Guard for your travel insurance.

Africa Publications
Africa Geographic Magazine  - The absolute best magazine for keeping in touch with African wildlife, conservation, eco-travel, indigenous cultures and the general environment. It also includes some excellent photography.

Africa Birds & Birding Magazine  - The sister publication to Africa Geographic - same high quality publication strives to foster awareness of African birdlife and to encourage the growth of birdwatching as a pastime and for its ecotourism potential.

Wildlife Artwork
Alison Nicholls' African Wildlife Art  - One of our favorite artists, Alison paints lovely watercolors and donates to several very worthy wildlife conservation groups in southern Africa.  We recently commissioned Alison to create a new image for our letterhead and are also putting together Sketching Safaris to Botswana with Alison as the guide and instructor.

Steph Walton's Home of Wildlife Art  - Steph is a superb artist specializing in African Wildlife paintings.

Sue Dickinson Wildlife Art  - We have one of Sue's original's (of a photo of James') in our lounge and we love her work.

Wildlife Art Magazine  - The definitive wildlife art magazine for collectors. Articles about the artists, information on how to contact artists and/or purchase their artwork, etc.  The magazine includes mainly paintings and sculpture with some drawings and photography thrown in on occasion. There are some incredibly talented artists out there!

Afrigalah's Wildlife Photos   - Cool site with safari photography and information on safaris to Africa.

Wildlife Travel
The Wildlife Travel Website - Information, articles and "travellers' tales" for fellow wildlife enthusiasts and for those who wish to travel and see wildlife.

Photography / Imaging
The Digital Photography Review - The latest in digital photography and imaging news plus reliable reviews of the latest digital cameras and accessories. The website also includes a digital camera buyer's guide, side-by-side comparisons and a comprehensive database of digital camera features and specifications. Great for anyone considering purchasing a new digital camera.

The Computer Darkroom - Instructive articles, tutorials, reviews and technical discussions relating to digital image processing. The website covers a broad range of topics including: Film Scanning, Photoshop, Color Management, Monitor Calibration, and Printing with Epson Inkjet Printers. One of James' favorites!

Nature's Best Foundation / Magazine - Nature’s Best Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to inspire a greater understanding and stewardship of nature through the art of photography. Nature’s Best magazine is a one hundred page, award-winning quarterly publication that offers a showcase presentation of nature and wildlife recorded by the world’s leading photographers, naturalists, and adventurers. Great images here.

Wine
Southern Wines - Great mail order resource for wines from the southern hemisphere.  James has been ordering South African wines here for over 10 years.  Owned by an ex-pat South African.  Superb selection of South African and Australian wines especially.  Wine club available.  Highly recommended - tell them James sent you.
