STEENBERG COUNTRY
HOTEL
- CONSTANTIA VALLEY (CAPE WINELANDS), SOUTH AFRICA
The five-star graded Steenberg Country
Hotel is situated on the Cape's oldest wine farm, a mere twenty minute
drive from the bustling heart of Cape Town. The hotel nestles in
the tranquil Constantia Valley, against the slopes of the Steenberg
Mountain, offering sweeping views over False Bay. The hotel buildings,
dating back to 1682 were painstakingly restored and have been declared
a National Monument. Here the legendary elegance and traditions of
the 17th century blend harmoniously with the refined luxuries and
conveniences of our modern age. The first owner of Steenberg was
an extraordinary young lady, Catharina Ustings, who arrived in the
Cape in 1662 from Lubeck on the Baltic Coast of Germany. She named
the farm Swaaneweide - feeding place of Swans - which today is the
Prestigious Steenberg Estate.
The estate boasts it’s own world
renowned, working winery, which produces a selection of award winning
fine wines. Guided
tours, lunches on the terrace and wine tasting are available on request.
For the keen golfer, an 18 hole, championship golf course also forms
part of this prestigious estate. The original winery provides the setting
for the Restaurant at Steenberg. European style décor incorporates
all the historical architectural features of the old winery. Gourmet
cuisine features traditional Cape and continental dishes.
Well marked walks in the area take the
rambler through spectacular forests, over ravines, and through beautiful
botanical gardens. False Bay and Chapman's Peak are a few minutes drive
away and offer scenic panoramic views. A drive to Cape Point Nature
Reserve and Hout Bay also offer diverse and splendid scenery. |

adjacent to the formal vegetable garden. (The gable of the building

Dining
Catharina's
Restaurant: Catharina
Ustings, the first owner of Steenberg, lives on through the nuances of
Catharina's. Experience
the captivation of flavour's - tempestuous,
exotic, contemporary & delectable. A fresh & innovated blend
of classical cuisine amidst ageless splendor.
Rich, dark wood, antique carpets,
oak furnishings and display dressers filled with original Spode crockery
create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Being an old wine cellar, cozy dining alcoves have been created in the
original vats. Both the main dining area and the bar feature fire-places.
A section of the original wine storage areas have been turned into small
wine cellars, keeping the more than 80 different wines on offer at optimum
temperatures. These mini cellars form part of the restaurant and can
be viewed whilst dining, giving guests the feeling of dining in a cellar.
Steenberg Winery
Take a leisurely
stroll to the winery, where you can taste some of Steenberg vineyards'
choice wines. Wine has always been a part of life at Steenberg since
the first vintage was produced here in 1695. Now, from the vineyards
flanking the golf course to the winery perched on the hill, the traditions
live on.
Classic Wines: Vineyards surround
a state of the art wine cellar with cultivars selected to suit the
chemical nature of the soils, microclimate and altitude of the slopes
of Steenberg. Vines planted include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir,
Shiraz, Nebbiolo and Table Grapes.
Tasting: The wines
are available to clients and guests who are welcome to visit the winery
for tasting when in the area. Please note that wine tasting is
by appointment. Steenberg wines are also available
for purchase from the farm. Other wineries on the Constantia
Valley
wine route
are a short drive away, and tours can be arranged at your convenience. Activities
The Steenberg Golf
Course: The private Steenberg
Golf Club is available to hotel guests, members and their guests only.
The golf course has been designed to take full
advantage of natural features and hazards.
The design of the central clubhouse is harmonious with the historic
architecture of the estate. The cool, airy rooms are fronted with green
French doors onto a terrace. The course was designed and built by one
of South Africa's leading golf course architects, Peter Matkovich. The
18 hole championship golf course meanders leisurely through the Steenberg
vineyards, pine forests and gentle waterways.
The course features four distinct
areas: Wetlands, Parklands, The Cape Flats and Fynbos. With five
different tees, the course can be enjoyed
by all, from championship to junior level. Many golfers envy the superb
condition of this soft spike course and it is widely renowned for having
the best greens in the Cape. There are also a number of practice
areas, including a driving range, chipping area with sand traps and
a large
putting green.
