Lake Pleasant Hotel & Spa in the Knysna District of South Africa's Garden RouteThe Garden Route, a panoramic region idyllically placed between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains, is home to Lake Pleasant Hotel & Spa in the Knysna district. This charming property, built on the edge of one of the few natural freshwater lakes in the southern hemisphere, is a serene retreat set in the picturesque Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve.

Lake Pleasant Hotel & Spa (5-Star) has 36 luxurious en-suite rooms all with their own balcony overlooking the beautiful Groenvlei lake. Nestling between verdant hills, lakes, indigenous forests and unspoilt beaches, this is an area of incomparable beauty. Appetizing contemporary modern cuisine is prepared from the freshest produce, flavoured and garnished using fresh herbs. A la carte menus marvelously display the chef's intrinsic culinary talent and exclusive award winning wines tempt even the most jaded palate.

Afternoon high tea is a decadent delight. For the romantic, picnic baskets filled with delicious delicacies can be ordered for the beach at sunrise, or sunset, or anywhere in-between. The dining experience would be incomplete without aromatic coffees, decadent desserts, warming cognacs, fragrant cigars and friendly attentive service.

Even if you never set foot outside the boundaries of the Lake Pleasant Hotel & Spa, there is enough to keep you busy for days on end. Situated on the shores of Groenvlei, in the Bird Sanctuary of the Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve, the possibilities are endless.

The hotel was originally established in 1895 as a hunting lodge.

Lake Pleasant Hotel & Spa's 36 suite luxury rooms are well equipped with all necessary modern conveniences to ensure complete satisfaction and pleasure. Standard deluxe, duplex and manor suites all open onto private balconies overlooking the lake - a harmonious blend of conservation, recreation and accommodation. Each room is outfitted with a satellite TV that has a selection of channels, air-conditioning, under-floor heating, hairdryer, private bar, tea and coffee facilities, internet connection, a writing desk and a safe. Large, well-appointed bathrooms have his and her basins, a bath and shower and imported Molton Brown amenities.

Facilities
The hotels' facilities are superb, catering for both indoor and outdoor activities. Relax in the library lounge filled with a selection of interesting and diverse books whilst sipping tea in front of the fireplace. Embark on an aromatic voyage and experience the expert attention of the professional staff at the Wellness Centre. Enjoy board games in the bar, savour cigars and drinks in the cigar lounge, or ask the hotel staff to arrange a tailor-made tour of the area for those guests wanting to explore the many delights of the Garden Route.

The Lake Pleasant Spa
The Wellness Centre has an indoor heated spa pool, steam and sauna rooms, a Vichy shower and a hydrotherapy bath.
Therapies range from a firm Swedish massage and an eclectic Jamu relaxing massage to the more exotic and revitalising Bali Spa rituals. These rituals incorporate the Javanese Lulur - a sensuous body ritual that exfoliates, polishes and pampers - the Volcanic Earth Ritual - a purifying and refreshing ritual that purifies and cools the body. Take some time out to relax and rejuvenate at the Wellness Centre on the lake.

Activities
Leisure activities in this spectacularly scenic area include bird watching, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking trails and whale and dolphin watching. Only a short drive from the Hotel are six famous golf courses, the Cango Caves, ostrich and cheetah farms at Oudsthoorn; as well as the many attractions of George and Plettenberg Bay. One of the major features at Lake Pleasant is a fully equipped Wellness Centre, ideally suited for mid-week, weekend or any day breakaways for a bit of serious pampering or intense relaxation essential for the overworked and stressed.

The natural freshwater lake, Groenvlei, once home to hippos, provides visitors with excellent fishing, sailing and boating opportunities. This scenic lake is a haven for birds such as the Brownhooded Kingfisher and Darter. Open Land Rover nature drives and guided nature walks through the dense woodland of the indigenous Milkwood forests in the adjacent pristine Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve can be arranged. Outstanding views of the rugged coastline and fine displays of fynbos make this a memorable experience. The reserve supports prolific birdlife and a variety of lichen, grasses and majestic Milkwood trees. Rare African Black Oystercatchers are a breathtaking site skimming over the ocean. Cruises are on offer on the hotel's private boat “Yellowbill”.

Nearby Attractions
Knysna and the lakes
Lake Pleasant is situated in the heart of the Lake area of the Garden Route and forms the perfect base from which to explore... Take a scenic drive to nearby Knysna, where you can visit the spectacular sight of the Heads, taste fresh oysters or browse amongst quaint and interesting shops for items of arts and crafts. Knysna is also well-known for its hand-crafted wooden furniture. While in the area, look out for the famous elephants of the Tsitsikamma Forest or visit Noetzie with its fairy-tale castle, and don't forget the little stone church at Belvidere.

George and the Choe-Tjoe
George, the biggest town on the Garden Route, boasts the smallest cathedral south of the equator. For a nostalgic touch take a trip on the world famous Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train. It will take you on a magical journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country; past the tranquil lakes of Wilderness, along endless beaches and through the woodlands to Knysna.

Caves & Forests
Further up the coast, you will find Plettenberg Bay, Keurbooms River Mouth and the densely wooded Nature's Valley. The Outeniqua Pass will take you to Oudtshoorn, its famous Cango Caves and Ostrich Farms. Lake Pleasant Hotel & Spa could not have been more ideally situated. Executive modern conference and function facilities are available. Otherwise, breathtaking scenery awaits those who explore one of the many hiking trails and nature walks throughout either the nature and marine reserve or other local hiking trails in the area.

Sun, Sea, Dolphins & Whales
If you are in search of sun and sea, or whale and dolphin watching, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean are only 2.5 kilometers away. Besides the Hotel's tennis court and swimming pool, it is also centrally situated between six famous golf courses.
