KWA MARITANE BUSH LODGE
- PILANESBERG GAME RESERVE
Construction on Kwa Maritane had already commenced centuries
ago. An ancient alkaline volcano fashioned the very hills that Kwa
Maritane stands on today. Hence its name, which literally means "Place
of the Rock". From here, you can look out over the infinite plains
adjacent to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve - an area rich in wildlife
and hosting around 365 species of birds.
Perhaps it's these ideal natural
surroundings that won Kwa Maritane the "Best
Game Lodge" Award at the 1998 and 2001 Conference & Exhibition
Venue Awards. |

Location &
Nearby Attractions
A magnificent wildlife sanctuary lies not too far from
the bustle of Johannesburg and Pretoria - located close enough to drive
comfortably in under two hours, yet sufficiently distanced from the city
lights.
Pilanesberg Game Reserve, which covers
some 55,000 hectares, is the fourth largest in southern Africa. This
malaria-free park is perched on the eroded vestiges of an alkaline
volcanic crater - one of only three such craters in the world. On its
undulating hills and everlasting open plains, you can get a glimpse
of the 'Big Five', an abundance of animals and over 360 bird species.
As well as the 'Big Five', you might also find the nocturnal brown
hyena, wild dogs, cheetah, hippo, crocodile and even sable.
Many guests are
content to spend time at the lodge, drinking in the meditative silence
and holding the wide, open plains in awe; but they never leave without
tracking down the Big Five in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, on game
walks or drives.
Kwa Maritane and Pilanesberg Game Reserve are situated adjacent to the world-renowned Sun
City Resort. For a
diversion, there's all the bustle and excitement of a day at Sun
City, including:
Golf
Tennis
Squash
Ten pin bowling
Horse riding
Crocodile farm
Aviary
Casino
Live entertainment venues
Theatre and movie
Trails
Do a brief one-hour bird and tree identification trail around the lodge
or opt for the more extensive two-hour walk that takes you deeper into
the park and into more detail.
Game Drives
The focal point of the sunrise and afternoon
game drives is game and bird identification. From September to March, the
lodge also offers a more leisurely sundowner drive, with sundowners and
game viewing
by spotlight. Make a whole evening of it with an afternoon drive combined
with a bush braai at the Boma.
During the summer months of September
to April, you'll enjoy the thrill of a nightlife encounter on special
night drives. And if you'd prefer to stay in, you can always catch live wildlife on
the Africam facility in your bedroom.
Then there is also the unique experience of a 130 metre underground
tunnel leading to the Hide. The perfect vantage point for an intimate
look into the wild, without being detected yourself.
