Depart from Cape Town's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront by ferry for a 25-minute trip across Table Bay to Robben Island - weather permitting. This World Heritage Site, and South Africa's most revered national monument, was a prison for some 450 years - for, at various times, convicts, slaves, exiled Eastern princes, lepers, the insane and those punished for resisting oppressive rule - including Nelson Mandela.
Return to the Waterfront to meet your local guide and continue to District Six, a once vibrant city suburb that today stands empty due to the forced removal of some 60,000 residents and the demolition of their homes during the Apartheid era. Drive across the Cape Flats, where the non-white inhabitants of District Six and other areas were placed, segregated by colour, religion and ethnicity. Lunch at a township restaurant, to sample typical African food and hospitality in an authentic setting.
We then meet Vivian Zilo, who established the Iliso Care Society in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats in June 2005, with the objectives of fighting poverty; encouraging community empowerment; organising youth workshops and providing safety and care for orphans, vulnerable children and the elderly. She solicited the help of four other women to provide services to their community, and started giving 100 or so beneficiaries (the numbers are always on the increase) one meal a day, during the week.
Return to your hotel via Langa, to view the impacts of racial segregation under Apartheid, as well as new housing developments having a positive effect on the lives of many township residents. The tour may run in reverse to accommodate Robben Island bookings.
NOTE: Robben Island trip is scheduled, transfers and Township are private.
OTHER TOURS ARE AVAILABLE WHICH INCLUDE BUSHMEN CULTURE, JEWISH CULTURE, LOCAL CRAFTS AND COOKING.
