SABYINYO SILVERBACK LODGE - VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (PARC NATIONAL DES VOLCANS), RWANDA
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is situated on the edge of the Parc National des Volcans in North Western Rwanda, in an undulating area of 11 hectares with fabulous views towards the Parc National des Volcans, its 5 volcanoes (comprising part of the Virunga Volcano range) and distant lowland agricultural areas. All guest cottages are discretely and privately situated in the folds of the hills, and each has its own unique view. The altitude of the lodge is approximately 7,000 feet above sea level so the climate is generally cool, and the volcanoes rise to a height of almost 15,000 feet.

The lodge is only minutes away from the headquarters of the Volcanoes National Park from where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla – perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible.

The lodge, situated in the foothills of the mighty Virungas, the chain of 15,000 ft volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, affords wonderful views of the volcanoes and the surrounding countryside. Guest cottages and the main lodge building have been beautifully constructed and appointed and the lodge is the perfect base from which to explore this unique and fascinating corner of Africa.

The lodge comprises of a central building, with reception, bar, dining room, library/games room, community awareness centre, client washrooms and a shop. Both the bar and dining room have extensive outdoor decks from which our clients can enjoy the spectacular views. Three large fireplaces provide warmth and all rooms are finished with a polished wooden floor. Two patio areas afford wonderful and dramatic views to the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding lowland farmland.

Accommodation comprises of 5 cottages, 2 suites and 1 family suite. All client accommodation rooms have at least one private veranda, a sitting room with fireplace, bedroom, dressing room and a large modern bathroom. The family suite has an extra bedroom and bathroom incorporated.

The lodge is constructed of local stone, finished with an ochre coloured plaster. All guest rooms have large windows to make best use of the wonderful views. Double thickness walls maintain the warmth from the fireplaces when it is cold outside, and keep the rooms cool in the warmer weather during the day. The lush gardens have been extensively landscaped. All are stone buildings with Rwandese terracotta tile roofs, and feature large sitting areas, fireplaces, stylish en-suite bathrooms finished with Venetian plaster a dressing room and a sheltered veranda. Heat exchangers in the fireplaces provide a plentiful supply of hot water.

Activities
Gorilla Trekking
The main attraction of Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is its proximity to the Virunga Mountains and the Parc National des Volcans where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla. Gorilla trekking is perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible.

Gorilla Trekking is done with Park Rangers. Once the gorillas are located, clients are allowed to stay a maximum of one hour with the gorilla family visited. Clients are instructed that they MUST follow the instructions of the Park Rangers at all times. Mountain Gorillas are potentially dangerous animals and clients must follow safety instructions at all times. It is not possible to predict the time required to trek in any one day – this depends upon the gorilla family allocated to particular clients and the location of that family. It is recommended that clients book gorilla trekking on 2 consecutive days. For most people seeing these wonderful animals is such a powerful experience that they wish to go again the following day, even if a long day trekking on the volcanoes is required.

Visit Genocide Memorials/Cultural Visits
Visit the nearby Genocide memorials and learn about and understand both the genocide and the incredible progress Rwanda has made since. In the local area around Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge there are some interesting cultural and social projects to visit. These include the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village where ex poachers have turned their lives around and now work to celebrate local Rwandese culture, the bustling and colourful Musanze Market, Kinigi Cultural Village and Community Walk created by the Sabyinyo Community Lodge Association, the Sonrise High School and the beautiful and enchanting Buhanga sacred forest.

Spa Treatments
At Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge we offer specialized massage treatments designed to relax refresh and re-juvinate you after a hike to see the mountain Gorillas. From the lodge we offer escorted walks, escorted mountain bike excursions and escorted bird watching walks in the local area.

National Parks
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is located on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park and a 15 minute drive from the parks headquarters where all activities in the Park start from. Activities on offer in the Volcanes National Park include Gorilla trekking, treks to see the Golden Monkeys, treks to Lake Ngezi, treks to Diane Fossey Grave, climbing Mt. Visoke, climbing Mt Karisimbi, climbing Mt. M’gahinga and climbing Mt. Muhabura.

Exploring further afield there is plenty to see and do in the larger Northern Province area of Rwanda. There is the tropical Gisenyi Lakeside resort, hiking in the ecologically important Gishwati Forest, trips to the scenic Twin Lakes, cruises on Lake Bulera and treks to the Russumo falls.
