indigenous vegetation and forests framed by majestic mountain ranges
on the one side and the Indian
Ocean with its pristine white
beaches on the other, make the Garden Route, situated on the East
Coast of Southern Africa, one of the most beautiful areas of South
Africa.
Hog Hollow Country Lodge, a private nature
reserve, is situated 18km east of the small coastal town of Plettenberg
Bay. An ideal base to explore the Garden Route, Hog Hollow
Country Lodge offers views over the Matjes River gorge and indigenous
forest towards the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The 14ha property is zoned
a private nature reserve by Cape Nature Conservation.

Twelve uniquely individual
rooms offer uninterrupted views over the indigenous forests and Tsitsikamma
Mountains. These comfortable
African-styled rooms, situated in the gardens surrounding the main
house, are decorated in earthy colors, naturally woven fabrics, artifacts
and tones from north-eastern Africa, and local handcrafted woods.
Each room has a private wooden deck, fitted with its own hammock and
wooden furniture overlooking the forest and an en-suite bathroom with
bath and shower.
Forest Suite (2)
Freestanding cottages, with French doors
leading out onto full-length wooden decks with hammocks to wile away
those balmy sunny days. These suite include a king-sized bed, lounge,
bathroom (shower and bath) and atrium. The rooms are beautifully
appointed
in rich
textures,
ochre & cream fabrics
and original artifacts from Africa.
Garden Suites (6)
Single
story accommodation, again richly decorated in the African theme, with
French doors leading out onto private balconies with hammocks and
spectacular views over the Gorge and the Mountains.
The Round House
Traditionally used as the honeymoon or romantic
suite. Built from a reservoir, this unique, circular duplex decorated
in naturally woven fabrics, artifacts & earthy
tones from northeastern Africa, has a lounge downstairs with restful
views over the gardens and indigenous forest.
Upstairs, the master bedroom with
en-suite bathroom (bath & shower),
has a Juliet wooden balcony overlooking the Matjies Gorge & Tsitsikamma
Mountain range, ideal for sipping chilled champagne on star-lit evenings.
Loft Suites (3)
The Loft Suites are double story accommodation,
decorated in the rich textures of Africa and with original artwork. Upstairs
is the master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom (shower and bath).
Downstairs French doors lead out from the lounge onto private wooden
decks, again with hammocks in which to recline.
Facilities
The main house is where it all happens
and, apart from the dining room, includes three lounge areas; one leading
out to the sun drenched
pool area while another offers the privacy of a leafy garden
vista, ideal for reading. The third is situated underneath the
old Cape Ficus Tree growing through the deck, perfect for spotting
birds coming to feed off the fruit
in the tree.
From the social milieu of the main house
to the cool waters of the pool, overlooking the Matjes River Gorge
and a prefect
spot to soak up the sun whilst sipping a fresh drink or enjoying a light
lunch, the Hog Hollow bar provides excellent beverages to complement
all occasions.
Dining
Hog Hollow is well known for its delectable
food and friendly, personalized service. Farmhouse breakfasts are served
on the wooden deck overlooking
the forest on crisp clear days or indoors near the huge fireplace when
it is cooler.
In the evenings, guests enjoy scrumptious dinners around
the communal table in the convivial comfort of the candle-lit main house. Meals are prepared using only the freshest of local produce
and any guests with specific dietary requirements are catered for individually.
Activities
At breakfast, hosts assist the guests in
planning their day. There are so many wonderful places to see and things
to do
in the area that guests
are able to book activities according to anyone's specific individual
needs.
Attractions nearby include at least 50
charted and guided walks. The area is part of one of the world's great
floral kingdoms with a host of bird-life and wildlife for nature lovers.
Horse-riding,
mountain biking, canoeing, windsurfing, canopy walk, scuba diving,
paragliding, deep sea fishing, bungi jumping and black water tubing
down the Storms River Gorge are among some of the great
outdoor activities the area has to offer. There is sea kayaking in the bay as well
as the opportunity to explore Robberg and Stormsriver Mouth Nature
Reserves
The unique and most exciting feature
of this area is the abundance of marine mammals in the bay which is
flanked by two marine
nature reserves and therefore rich in food for the resident whales
and dolphins. Apart from the resident Bryde whale, Indo-Pacific Humpback,
Bottlenose and Common Dolphins who feed in the bay all year round, the
area also enjoys seasonal visits from the Southern Right, Humpback
and Killer Whales during their annual migration.
From July to September every year, Southern
Right Whales migrate to this part of the Indian Ocean to calve. There
are organized boat trips
all year round to see Brydes whales and dolphins. Huge schools of dolphin
surfing the breakers or leaping clear of the blue sea, are a regular
sight throughout the year.
Boat trips are available through Ocean
Blue Adventures where you wil have the opportunity to interact with the
dolphins in the bay. Ocean Adventures
will provide you with fascinating insights into the rich marine heritage.
View the beauty of this coastline from a different angle and enjoy the
exceptional photographic opportunities available. Special requests for
tailor-made trips can be accommodated.
African Ramble Air Safaris offer a dedicated whale watching
flight and a thirty minute scenic flight along the coast from Plettenberg
Bay to the Knysna Heads.
Equitrailing specializes in horse trails through pristine
indigenous forests and can incorporate biking, canoeing, abseiling and
hiking.
A newly constructed path to Monkeyland Primate
Sanctuary gives guests the opportunity to view numerous
indigenous species such as Stinkwood and Yellowwood trees, a variety
of Fynbos and wildlife such
as Bush Pig,
Bush Buck, Lynx, Otters, Baboons, Monkeys and prolific bird life including
the Knysna Loerie, whilst enjoying the hour long walk starting at the
lodge. After
soaking up the splendor of a living forest, you can relax on
the sunny deck of the restaurant while enjoying a meal or a cocktail.
