KWARA CAMP -
OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA
Kwara Camp and Little Kwara are located in the
175,000-hectare private Kwara Concession in the remote northern part
of the Okavango Delta. Kwara shares a common boundary on the northern
edge of the Moremi
Game Reserve. The area is one of permanent Delta water, and this
unspoiled pristine wilderness has a variety of habitats ranging from
reed and papyrus-lined waterways to rolling grasslands and ancient
forests. Kwara Main camp is situated in a forested island under tall
trees overlooking a lagoon in the open flood plains of the 1.6 million-hectare
Okavango Delta. Little Kwara is situated nearby and also in a shady
tree'd island. At either camp, you will discover why the Okavango Delta
is considered one of the jewels of Africa and indeed the world. It is
mysterious, calming, unpredictable and very wild. Kwara Camp and Little
Kwara are owned and operated by Kwando Safaris.

Little Kwara is an intimate five-tent camp and is consistent with the Kwando Safaris promise: - Intimate Camps with Personal Service = Vintage Africa. Hidden
amongst trees, access to Little Kwara is by air via the Kwara airstrip.
While the camp will share a name with its sister camp, Little
Kwara Camp is a completely separate camp from Kwara. The tents
are spacious, and are elevated into the tree canopy on wooden decks,
each with its own private veranda. Each tent has its
own en-suite facilities, comprising bathroom with bath and an inside/outside
shower. This is an ideal camp for exclusive use by small groups and families.
Activities
Kwara Camp
Due to the specific
location of the camp, Kwara Camp is able to offer, power boating, mekoro
(dug out canoe) trips, walks and game drives – all year round.
In addition Kwara is in a large private concession enabling the game
drives to operate both off road and at night. The presence of permanent
water ensures year round game viewing and also allows mekoro trips in
shallow water throughout the year. Kwara is one of the few camps in the
Delta able to make this claim. Kwara has a double-deck pontoon boat which
allows guests to get very close to birds and animals for up-close photography
and game viewing. Well-trained, armed guides will also conduct game walks
through the islands of the Delta and transfer their knowledge to their
guests. Fishing at Kwara is also superb and the famed Tiger Fish, as
well as Bream, Catfish and Pike are frequent catches. Kwando Safaris
subscribes to the catch and release policy, but exceptions can be made
if you wish to eat your fish.
Taking a morning mekoro trip, moving silently through the flood plains is a memorable experience and the highlight for many. The trip is broken by an island visit where guests rest in the shade of the large trees while surveying the surrounding delta waters and lagoons. After the refreshment break our trained and armed polers take you on a guided walk on the island before your relaxing return to camp by mokoro.
Little Kwara
Little Kwara Camp offers all the
following activities - mekoro trips year round, double deck boat
cruises, island walks as well as game drives both off road and at
night. Fishing is also offered on request, using normal reel and
rod fishing - flying fishing enthusiasts need to bring their own
equipment. Guides and trackers will beat the same high standard as
is normal in all Kwando Safaris Botswana camps. To put the concession
area into context - 175,000 ha (1,750 square kilometers) is almost
half a million acres!
The ability to operate off road and at night is critical in order to see the up to 30% of interesting mammal species that are mainly active at night. These include leopard, lion, wild dog, hyena and smaller predators. The presence of permanent water at Little Kwara ensures excellent year-round game viewing. The permanent water also ensures that mokoro trips (dugout canoes) can take place in shallow water throughout the year. Little Kwara is one of a handful of camps able to make this claim of being a wet and dry camp all year around.
Wildlife
The Kwara/Little Kwara area is home
to an astounding array of animal and bird life, including Lion, Hyena,
Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dog. There are good populations of Elephant,
Buffalo and Zebra and over 300 species of birds. Antelope species are
prolific with good populations of the rare sable antelope. Trips to the
wondrous Godikwe Lagoon - one of the largest breeding colonies on Botswana,
are an absolute must. In season (from September to December), you will
see thousands of
birds and their young in their annual nesting grounds with amazing interactions.
It is here that guests will most appreciate the double-deck boat as they
are able to peer into the birds' nests from above.
