Sandton and Sandton City
Sandton is an upscale and wealthy area situated within the metro of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. The name comes from the combination of two of its suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston. In 1969 Sandton was promulgated as a municipality in its own right, but lost its status as an independent town after the reorganization of South African local government.
Sandton is known as "Africa's richest square mile" and is a cosmopolitan melting pot of global trades, cultures and trends. Home to approximately 300,000 residents and 10,000 businesses, including investment banks, top businesses, financial consultants, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and one of the biggest convention centres on the African continent, the Sandton Convention Centre. Gautrain
Johannesburg's recently constructed rapid-rail transport system - The Gautrain - is the first of its kind in Africa.
In June 2010 the R24 billion Gautrain took to the rails for the first time, offering safe, reliable and comfortable public transport. This state-of-the-art rapid rail network comprises of two links: a link between Pretoria and Johannesburg and a link between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton.
The Sandton Gautrain station is a short five-minute walk from Sandton City.
The Gautrain system operates with two train services:
1. Airport Service - Links Sandton to the OR Tambo International Airport at a cost of R100 per single trip. All airport trains go via the Sandton station.
2. Commuter Service - Links all the stations with the exception of the airport at various different costs.
Travelling at speeds of 160 to 180 kilometers per hour, you can reach Pretoria from Johannesburg in just 40 minutes and from Sandton to the airport in only 15 minutes.
Nelson Mandela Square
Adjoined to Sandton City, the Nelson Mandela Square celebrates African hospitality and International style. Home to some of South Africa's finest restaurants, exclusive couture and designer labels and a European styled piazza, Nelson Mandela Square offers chic sophistication, culture and glamour all under the African sun.
Formerly known as Sandton Square, Nelson Mandela Square is linked to Sandton City and is one of the most fashionable destinations in Johannesburg, offering 90+ exclusive shops and boutiques, as well as fine dining experiences and sidewalk cafes. Standing six meters tall and weighting 2.5 tons, the bronzed Nelson Mandela statue in the Nelson Mandela Square was unveiled on the centre's 10-year anniversary in March 2003. The unveiling also served as a celebration of 10 years of democracy in South Africa as well as the renaming of the centre from Sandton Square to Nelson Mandela Square.
