Activities
The Lowveld
An easy drive of only three and a half hours from Johannesburg and perfectly placed just a few kilometres from White River, within easy reach of the Kruger National Park and relaxing drives through the stunning scenery of the Blyde River Canyon and the escarpment with places to visit like the Three Rondawels, Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window and Pinnacle viewpoint, Jock of the Bushveld, numerous Waterfalls and Pilgrim's Rest.
The Panorama Route
A hauntingly beautiful landscape, breathtaking in it's vast scale - where the Lowveld savannah sweeps in to meet the Highveld like a sea of adventure breaking in on cliffs of mystery and romance. It has a rich and colourful history with hunters, safari traders, Voortrekkers settlers, prospectors, raiding warrior bands, transport riders and countless characters who wandered here in search of fortune. Staggering beauty encompasses you, no matter which area of The Panorama you visit - spectacular gorges, isolated buttresses, unusual geological features, rolling mountains, deep ravines, flourishing foliage and fairy-tale waterfalls. The only way to experience it is first-hand.
The Kruger National Park
Where nearly 2 million hectares of unrivalled diversity of life forms fuses with historical and archaeological sights - this is real Africa.
The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, this national park of nearly 2 million hectares, SANParks - Kruger National Park is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.
Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man's interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park's natural assets.
Leopard Creek Golf Course
Innovative architectural and landscaping techniques ensure that the Leopard Creek golf course and living areas are naturally protected from animals, while lakes and small streams have been diverted through the development to create scenic vistas and interesting golf strategies.
Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek, for much of the water is home to the magnificent creatures for which the river is named, crocodiles. Extensive use has been made of water features and sightings of crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and wild boar are commonplace, either on the course itself or in or next to the river running alongside several holes.
The 505 meter par-five 13th is one of Leopard Creek's most memorable holes. Here the green is right on the edge of the Crocodile River but 32 meters above the level of the water, offering magnificent views up the river and into the Kruger Park.
Gary Player is especially proud of the par-five 18th with its island green and the par-four 9th with its peninsula green jutting out of the same body of water.
White River Country Club
The White River Country Club has an 18-hole championship golf course set amongst picturesque plantations on the banks of the White River. The existing 9-hole golf course at White River was completely revamped into a new and exciting 18-hole layout. Gary Player and Reg Taylor played a part in the re-design, and the golf course can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels. The river runs through the parkland course, and the abundance of water and forests provides a beautiful setting for golf, and also a few interesting challenges. In addition to the golf course the club offers excellent tennis, squash, cricket, hockey, and swimming facilities, all of which can be enjoyed year-round due to the fantastic climate in the region.
Sabie River Bungalows Golf Club
The Sabie River flows through the course, therefore here water comes into the play - in the proximity of the 14th and 15th hole. There are also river horses and crocodiles. The picture-beautiful course is has many hills with Kikuyu Fairways and Bayview grass Greens. The course is short, but nevertheless fastidious. Guests are always welcome. In the summer it can become unpleasantly hot however, therefore the winter and spring months are recommended.
A challenging 18 hole championship course awaits you on the bank of the infamous Sabi River. As the name suggests, Sabi River Bungalows is situated on the banks of the Sabi River just a few kilometers outside the town of Hazyview. This is the perfect setting for golf and a year round tropical climate ensures excellent course condition whenever you may choose to visit.
The course is flanked on one side by the Sabi River and there are numerous waterhazerds on the remainder of the course. Most of these hazards include the local Hippo communities which the course is most famous for. Although not long, it is a fantastic challenge and a thinking mans course. Enjoy an early morning game drive in the nearby Kruger National Park and finish off the day with a sundowner after and afternoon round of golf.
Matumi Golf Estate
Nelspruit Golf Club is one of Mpumalanga's top courses and is a must play when visiting this Lowveld. The course with its spectacular backdrop of kopjes, boasts a well-established, attractive Lowveld layout that dates back to 1939. It was a 9-holer for nearly 30 years before Grimsdell returned to complete a second nine in 1967-6, and then in 1998, course designer Peter Matkovich lead an extensive upgrade.
