GARONGA SAFARI
CAMP -
GREATER MAKALALI GAME RESERVEGaronga
Safari Camp's holistic philosophy is to offer a "Safari for
the Soul."
While on South African Safari enjoy Garonga’s
exclusive 14-bed lodge situated within the Greater Makalali Game Reserve,
one hour from the Phalaborwa Gate to the Kruger National Park. At Garonga,
guests are offered an unhurried, relaxing experience of nature in beautiful
surroundings. This South African Safari lodge was carefully designed
to look as though they themselves, like termite hills, appeared in
the bush over time.
Safari in South
Africa
This South African Safari camp is your sanctuary – an organic flowing
space that spreads harmony around it. In designing it the architects
rejected rigid thinking and created the natural flows of African
living. The result is as if the termites had combined forces over
eons to build a monument celebrating nature. It is almost as if they
created a South African oasis – a tranquil haven sheltering its guests
from the wilderness without. |

Inspired by the ochre-red spires of nature’s termite mounds,
the camp accommodation has been designed to reflect the textures of
the earth. Thick earthen columns, generous cushions on low beds and
billowing white fabrics epitomize this oasis in the middle of the South
African bush.
Tented Rooms
Each of the six en-suite 55-square metre rooms is sculpted out of rough
platered walls with an overarching tent. Heightening the dream-like
quality of your escape from normal life, each room nestles into ebony
trees on the banks of a water course and commands beautiful
views.
Indulgences
include hammocks on the wooden decks, indoor and outdoor showers and
romantically draped beds.
Little Garonga
Little Garonga has three fully en-suite, thatched and air-conditioned suites, all situated around centralized indoor/outdoor lounge areas, a swimming pool and built-in braai/BBQ area. Each suite has its own platform deck complete with hammock.
The Hambleden Suite (considered the main suite) has its own swimming pool, private indoor/outdoor lounge areas as well as its own two bed kiddies room adjoining the main bedroom that can be closed off if not required. The Chiltern Suite can be found 10m away, while the Buckingham Suite lies on the far side of the main lounge.
Hambleden Suite
Consists of the main bedroom for 2 x Adults, and a closed off room for 2 x Children, so it can be used by a Couple or a Family without either imposing or intruding. There is an indoor and Outdoor Lounge (Covered), a huge bathroom consisting of a beautiful hand beaten Copper Bath Tub, separate indoor shower and out door shower, two basins and a Toilet. It has its own Swimming pool with deck and hammock. The Suite has its own mini-bar and is fully air conditioned, as well as having ceiling fans.
Unparalled luxury accommodation in exceptional
surroundings makes the Hambleden Suite a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Rich, Balinese influences
as well as the romance of old-colonial Africa create a strikingly elegant,
warm and tactile atmosphere. Total privacy
and exclusivity are the key attributes. Wherever possible, guests will
be provided with
their own game vehicle.
Chiltern and Buckingham Suites
Each suite has their own platform deck and Hammock. On the deck there is a covered area, and an open area. There is a lounge area in the main bedroom consisting of a Mini-Bar, and air-conditioning Unit as well as ceiling fans. The Bathroom consists of a bath, two basins, an indoor shower and vast outdoor shower. They each have their own writing desk. The Suites are suitable for two Guests only.
Facilities
To add to the Garonga experience, the camp
also offers:
A special sala for aromatherapy, reflexology or reiki sessions
A 'bush-bath' set under the stars and lit with candles and lamps
A 'sleep-out deck' built around a large tree and overlooking a waterhole.
After enjoying the experience of a picnic basket at sunset, guests spend
the night in comfortable beds under mosquito nets, falling asleep beneath
the wheeling constellations and surrounded by the inimitable sounds of
the bush and its hunters raoming through the night.
Other facilities include pastels and
drawing easels, a small library of books and games and a curio shop.
The Garonga airstrip is only five minutes from the main camp.
Dining
At Garonga, they are also extremely passionate
about their cuisine. From the gourmet meals traditionally taken in the
dining area, to boma dinners with the turning night sky above you, to picnic
baskets specially packed for a leisurely game drive, you will appreciate
both the food and the surroundings in which it is served.
To complement both the gastronomic feasts
as well as the superb dining room scenery (both indoors and out), the
Garonga wine cellar specializes in offering high quality South African
wines. Activities
Garonga’s holistic philosophy
is to offer a safari for the soul; an unhurried and intimate
wildlife encounter – a
time to reflect and find inspiration in nature.
Acitivities include
game drives, wilderness walks, outdoor bush baths
and sleep-outs. Aromatherapy and reflexology sessions
are available, but many choose to lie in their hammocks
watching the grazing game in the river bed below.
Activities outside the camp include horse
riding or trips the the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window
and other interesting and beautiful sites nearby.
Wildlife
The majesty and power of Garonga, 'the big tusked one',
is just a small part of the game viewing you can expect
to see at Garonga Safari Camp. While offering four
of the Big Five - elephant, lion, leopard and rhino
- plus cheetah, an abundance of antelope and excellent
general game viewing, Garonga also offers a more intimate
wildlife
encounter.
It is suggested that guests
here embroider their later dreams of Garonga with memories
of walking, tracking and sleep-out excursions with the
experienced and armed rangers. Who knows, a riverine
amble could turn up all manner of interesting big cats,
face to face...
