Dining
Each restaurant at Constantia Uitsig
Estate - Constantia Uitsig, La Colombe and the Spaanschemat River Café -
has it own distinctive and clearly defined style, but what they all
have in
common is inspiration, passion, adventure,
art.
Constantia Uitsig
Restaurant
Housed in the original Cape Dutch Homestead and offering breathtaking
views of the surrounding mountains and vineyards, Constantia Uitsig
Restaurant under the expert hand of the Head Chef, Frank Swainston
has earned an international reputation for emanating a stylish, yet
relaxed atmosphere and promising a memorable dining experience. Frank believes in combining local and
international flavours to create an unique culinary experience, complemented
by
your choice of award
winning wines. “I like simple food, prepared with thought, love
and care. That’s our secret at Constantia Uitsig.” - Frank
Swainston.
La Colombe Restaurant
La Colombe
Restaurant was again voted the Top Restaurant in South Africa
for the second consecutive
year by Business Day,
the National morning newspaper. Tucked away under gigantic palms
and oak trees, La Colombe exudes a rustic charm and is housed in
the completely restructured guest breakfast room with direct frontage
onto the pristine blue swimming pool and its manicured garden surround.
As Franck Dangereux, Head Chef says, “A meal should stimulate
more than just the sense of taste – it must be a visual experience
too."
La Colombe’s menu – written up in French on a blackboard
and translated, like poetry, by the waiting staff – changes
every day, depending on what’s available. The food is always
sensual, stylish, distinctly French. “I use local ingredients,
cooked the french way.” Says Franck.
Spaanschemat River
Café
Adventurous flavour combinations and gorgeous presentation - the
accent being on fresh and healthy eating. All this whilst seated
in a tranquil garden setting with views of the Constantiaberg Mountains.
"Coffee shop it can be, if you want it, but it's also a restaurant
of rare sophistication" - Shirley Grace
Wines
Constantia Uitsig is situated in the historic Constantia
Valley, where wine farming originated in South Africa. Surrounded
by mountains, this beautiful valley is blessed with moderate temperatures,
excellent soils, good rainfall and cooling sea breezes from two
close-by oceans making it the ideal area for growing top class
grapes and world renowned wines.
Simon Van der Stel recognized the
wine growing potential here over 300 years ago
when he established the first wine farms of South Africa in the
Constantia Valley.
Napoleon drank Constantia Wines when he was incarcerated on St
Helena in the early 1800’s.
David and Marlene McKay bought
the farm in 1988 and have restored it to its former glory. Wine
farming has been revived
after careful research and planning by the Wine Director, Andre
Badenhorst. With 40 hectares under cultivation, the farm produces award winning
wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot.
Although the first wines were only produced six years ago, accolades
for the Constantia Uitsig Wines already include Veritas Gold and
Double Gold awards, Michelangelo awards and Silver at the London
International Wine Challenge.
