The Gardens: An
avid and knowledgeable gardener, Liz McGrath's exquisite gardens
at The Cellars-Hohenort
are acknowledged as one of the finest hotel gardens internationally.
These gardens were recently voted by Garden Design, a top American
magazine, as one of the top 30 hotel gardens in the world.
An example of her interest is her recent
discovery of 8 camphor trees in the grounds. No one was aware that
they were
there because they were being obscured by indigenous plants which had
sprung up and were growing in profusion around their base camouflaging
an important piece of Cape history. This was soon rectified and the
drama and history of the trees restored. According to Professor Wim
Tuimens of Stellenbosch University, the trees were brought out from
Japan by the Dutch East India Company and were planted in 1690 beside
the road that came out from the Castle to Constantia, where vegetables
and grapes were planted to extend the Company's gardens.
With
urban development, most of these ancient trees have disappeared.
There are still the odd one or two in the green belt of Constantia
and those at the Cellars - in her own words "it is wonderful
to have the 8 trees preserved in the gardens exactly as they were
planted
all those years ago". They are lovingly cared for and Liz
McGrath has applied to the National Monuments Board to have them
declared a
National Monument for posterity.
Conferences/Weddings: Cellars
Hohenort have
a single conference facility, situated in the Hohenort side of
the hotel,
the Seeliger room. It measures 9.4m x 4.3m and seats a maximum of
16 people in a boardroom style.
The private Jade & Gold dining
room in the Hohenort building can accommodate a maximum of 36 people
and measures 10m x 6m. The latest addition to the Cellars is the
new private dinning room adjoining the wine cellar, in the Cellars
building. This
measures 5.4m x 7.3m and can accommodate a maximum of 20 people. For
that "special occasion" they also
offer a private dinner for two in the wine cellar.
Out of season, bookings are welcome
for small exclusive weddings
Dining
The
Cellars-Hohenort Hotel boasts two world-class restaurants.
The Greenhouse Restaurant:
This stylish Restaurant, situated
adjacent to the historic cellar, carefully built around a giant
300-year-old oak tree offers unparalleled
garden vistas, whether you opt for the airy indoors or the
sun-drenched terrace.
The contemporary cuisine of Executive
Chef Phil Alcock is influenced by his extensive experience with the
French and British Master Chefs. Under the direction of Manager
Nicolene Kotze, the friendly service
is always attentive and unassuming and, of course, what dining experience
would be complete without the perfectly selected wine? For this very
reason, Sommelier Tatiana Marcetteau has been "tasting away",
compiling arguably one of the largest wine lists in Southern Africa
which boasts some fine old vintages seldom found elsewhere.
The standard winelist, backed by a
well-stocked cellar, has deservedly won a Diners Club Diamond Award
for three
consecutive years (2000-2002). An impressive 45-page tome, it offers
an inviting eclectic collection of local and imported wines, with
descriptions
of cultivars and styles. If its size is intimidating, help is
at hand. Petite bordeaux-born and French-trained sommelier Tattiana Marcetteau
is an expert in wine
and food marriages.
For the ultimate candlelit
dinner it is possible to reserve a table for two in the hotel's
wine cellar, surrounded
by "walls of wine" from
nearby vineyards.
The Cape Malay Restaurant:
This local cuisine restaurant is a unique
dining experience in authentic Cape Malay food and an exciting choice
of traditional taste treats awaits
you. Spicy, rustic colors create a pleasant Eastern ambiance. Enthusiastic
staff explain the concept behind the cuisine and guide guests through
the comprehensive menus.
Hot towels
wrung out in rose water will encourage you to relax and eat with
your fingers. The wine list has been chosen
specifically to
complement the spicy foods on offer and include a good spread of
local wines plus selected imports from Europe and the New World.
Guests are
ensured a wonderful evening and always come back for more.
Martha Williams, Head Chef at The Cape Malay Restaurant, serves two
set menus on a weekly cycle with a choice of starter and dessert.
All three main courses are prepared for the table to enhance your
Cape Malay dining experience.
