CULTURAL: ROBBEN
ISLAND & NEW REST TOWNSHIP
(Private
Full-Day Tour)
Depart from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for a 25-minute ferry trip across Table Bay to World Heritage site, Robben
Island – a
prison for some 450 years for slaves, exiled Eastern princes, lepers,
the insane and those punished for resisting oppressive rule, among
them, Nelson Mandela. The tour, led by guides (some of whom who
were political prisoners) includes a visit to the Prison Block and the infamous Limestone
Quarry.
Return to the Waterfront, where we meet our African guide and continue to District
Six, a once vibrant city suburb that today stands empty, thanks to the forced
removal of some 60,000 residents and the demolition of their homes during the
height of the Apartheid era. Drive across the Cape Flats, where the non-white
inhabitants of District Six and other areas were placed - segregated by colour,
religion and ethnic background.
Lunch in a township at a local restaurant, sampling typical African
food and
hospitality in an authentic setting. For tours during the week, we also visit
a Day Care Centre and a project where residents produce bricks for the building
of much-needed homes in their community.
Accompanied by our guide (who lives in the township), we also visit the settlement
of New Rest in Gugulethu, meeting people from its community who are involved
in the New Rest/Kanana Community Development Trust.
NOTE: Robben Island trip is scheduled, transfers and Township are private.
