NEW REST TOWNSHIP
(Private
Half-Day Tour)
Depart the city with our African guide for a first stop
in nearby
District Six - a once vibrant suburb that today stands empty,
thanks to the tragic forced removal of some 60,000 residents and
the demolition of homes during the height of the Apartheid era
in the 1960’s
and 70’s.
Drive across the Cape Flats (where the non-white inhabitants of District Six
and other areas were placed) to the informal settlement of New Rest in Gugulethu with your guide (who lives in the township). You are met by some of the residents
of the community involved in the New Rest/Kanana Community Development Trust.
Here, you are given an insight into this project which promotes the improvement
of the community and its people, with emphasis on housing development, adult
basic education, health, and economic and infrastructure development
We walk through New Rest to visit the local creche and community centre and also
stop at a project where bricks are made by locals to eventually build their own
homes.
This tour is an introduction to the many developmental challenges South Africa
still faces.
