NEW HOPE TOWNSHIP
(Private
Half-Day Tour)
Depart your hotel for the 20 minute drive to Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats. Khayelitsha means "new home" and was established in 1984 during the tribal war outbreak in K.T.C and Crossroads informal settlements. Like many other townships, it was created during the apartheid era as a dormitory area for the non-white working class. Today residents continue to face challenges such as HIV/AIDS and poverty in post-apartheid South Africa.
Next stop is the Iliso Care Society, to meet founder Vivian Zilo and learn about her community and the work she does within it. Vivian established the Iliso Care Society in June 2005. She solicited the help of four other women to begin providing services to their community.
The organisation is registered in terms of the Non-Profit Organisation Act of 1997 - through Social Development. Zilo and her helpers started their organization by doing research in the community and asking people exactly what they needed. The response was that poverty and unemployment were the key issues and thus the Iliso Care Society's main objectives are to fight poverty, encourage community empowerment, organise youth workshops and provide safety and care for orphans, vulnerable children, the elderly and school children. ICS started giving meals to 100 or so beneficiaries on a daily basis, however the numbers of people needing help are perpetually on the increase.
Today, Vivian brings New Hope to the people of Khayelitsha.
