HERMANUS AND DYER ISLAND CRUISE (Private
Full-Day Tour)
Leave the city and head over Hottentots Holland Mountains with magnificent views across False Bay and Cape Point in the distance. Continue on, through the verdant apple-growing regions of Grabouw and Elgin to Gansbaai (bay) and board a boat, for an unforgettable eco-tour around Dyer Island.
Dyer Island is a must for bird enthusiasts as it is home to some 8,000 African penguins and 120,000 Cape cormorants, as well as many other coastal species such as terns, African black oystercatchers, skuas and petrels.
Just off Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, with its colony of 60,000 Cape fur seals. From the boat, watch these intelligent, curious animals fish and play - ever watchful however of Great White sharks, prolific in a channel off Geyser Rock, aptly named Shark Alley.
On the return cruise to Hermanus there may well be abundant sightings of Southern Right Whales. From June to November, these giants make this town one of the world's top whale-watching destinations, with whales approaching very close to the shore to mate and calve.
There are excellent whale-watching vantage points from cliff-side paths in the town itself, where we lunch, then browse local craft markets, before heading homewards to Cape Town via the spectacular Marine Drive, which follows the rocky coastline past the villages of Betty's Bay, Rooiels and Pringle Bay.
