Desert Elephants in Damaraland

Situated on the northern face of the Huab River valley and looking south toward the imposing Brandberg Mountains, Damaraland Camp offers its guests endless visits. Early morning mists generated by the clash between the icy Atlantic Ocean and the warm desert air of the Skeleton Coast, drift inland along the river sand canyon, providing sustenance to the flora and fauna of the region. This comfortable and friendly camp offers walks and drives in one of the best wilderness areas in Namibia.

Although wildlife is not concentrated, Damaraland Camp is situated where the rare Desert Elephant roams, alongside Gemsbok (Oryx), Springbok, Ostrich and other hardy desert animals. Rare succulent plants somehow manage to eke out an existence in this harsh countryside. Damaraland Camp accommodates a maximum of 18 guests in nine comfortable tented rooms, with en-suite facilities including flush toilets and showers with hot and cold running water. The dining room and pub are combined under canvas, and an open fire is enjoyed on calm evenings. A feature of the camp is the unique rock pool. Activities throughout the area are in 4x4 vehicles, and on foot.

Elephants at Chitabe camp

Chitabe Camp (pronounced Chi-taah-bee) is located in a 28,000-hectare photographic reserve built on one of the most beautiful islands in the Okavango Delta, in a private area that is bordered on three sides by the Moremi Game Reserve. The reserve's boundary in the east is the Gomoti Channel and the Santantadibe River in the west. The area is made up of a superb variety of habitats, which include waterways and marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodland, riverine areas, open grasslands and seasonally flooded plains. Access into this area is only by aircraft. The camp has been operational since 1997 and has developed an outstanding reputation, especially with the specialized zoo groups.

Accommodation at Chitabe Camp consists of eight spacious East African style tents that are built on elevated wooden decks, beneath a lush tree canopy. Each tented room has en-suite facilities with flush toilets and both outdoor and indoor showers. Hot showers are guaranteed anytime of day or night. Each tent has a nice verandah with superb views of the open savannah in front of the camp. One of the tents is the honeymoon tent..

Game viewing is excellent here, and includes Buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Reedbuck, Lechwe, Impala, Zebra and Hippo. Wild Dogs are among the major attractions of this area and a long-standing program to study the Wild Dogs is based nearby (read more on the Wild Dogs below). Night drives can be very rewarding with good sightings of the rarer nocturnal animals such as Pangolin, Civet, Serval, Genet, Porcupine and Aardwolf. Guests will also likely see Zebra, Reedbuck, Red Lechwe, Impala and all the plains game.

DAYS 7 - 10; (4 nights)
After the morning game activity and brunch you depart Chitabe Camp and transfer by light aircraft to Savuti Camp, where accommodation has been reserved for four nights.

SAVUTI CAMP - LINYANTI RESERVE, BOTSWANA
Jump to Savuti Camp

Basis: Inclusive of all meals, game activities, laundry and local drinks.

Elephants in the Savuti Channel

Savuti Camp is situated within the private Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, well away from the public. The camp is located along the Savuti Channel, a legendary wildlife region that is best known for its large numbers of predators - especially Lions and Hyenas. . The area has a large wildlife resource with a wide variety of species, but it is most noted for its very large Elephant populations, which can reach enormous densities during our winter months. There are good populations of Impala, Lechwe, Kudu, Zebra, Giraffe, Sable, Waterbuck, Buffalo, Bushbuck and the smaller plains antelope. The major predators such as Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Wild Dog and Hyena are resident, and are regularly sighted. The reed and papyrus swamps are ideal for numerous and diverse species of birds and are a magnet for game in the dry winter months.

Accommodation at Savuti is in seven large comfortable walk in tents with en-suite facilities. Each tent is raised off the ground on platforms and has its own bathroom with a shower, hand basin and flush toilet. There is a separate dining room and pub under reed and thatch, also on raised platforms, as well as a plunge pool. All of the new tented rooms have indoor showers and loos and the tents all provide views of the famous Savuti waterhole.

Situated directly in front of camp is a small water hole which utilizes a solar powered pump to replenish the water.  During the dry season (May through November) this pan is rarely without wildlife visitors coming to quench their thirst.  The pan is especially popular with elephants.  Savuti has constructed a "woodpile hide" directly adjacent to the water hole which a fabulous for viewing and photographing the animals that come to visit.  The hide is made with huge and incredibly heavy leadwood trees that are even too heavy for elephants to budge, so it is quite safe inside the hide
