Experience a nostalgic camping safari that recreates a sense of wildlife viewing adventure reminiscent of the times of the early African explorers.
Adventurer Camping Facilities:
(Linyanti Adventurer Camp, Khwai Adventurer Camp & Xigera Mokoro Trail): 9.84 feet x 9.84 feet dome tents, complete with mini-verandas. Pure cotton linen (with duvets) on GI stretchers, bedside table with light and mini luggage benches finish the interior. Evening campfires are the norm and hurricane lanterns add to the atmosphere. The bathrooms are en-suite with the entrance to the canvas-wrap open air bathroom (zip door) through the rear of tent. There is a serviced en-suite tin bucket shower – with hot water available whenever guests require it. The bathroom in each tent has a short-drop toilet (Xigera Mokoro Trail has chemical toilets), with a separate toilet near the main area available for use during the day.
Adventurer camping aims to bring the guest closer to nature, by means of lively campfires, hurricane lanterns, diverse activities and a warm atmosphere permeating the camp (and its simple comforts). Adventurer camps are specifically outfitted to create that camping feel with a clear emphasis on essential comforts and pristine wilderness experience.
Guides: Highly skilled professional guides lead our safaris. The guides share the adventure and impart their vast knowledge of the natural world, history and culture. Their years of experience in the field and depth of understanding of animal behavior and the environment will leave you with a sense of complete wonder. Many of our guides are also skilled photographers and can assist you in capturing amazing wildlife photographs. Our guides are also available to lead private safaris and specialist trips.
Exclusive experience: To ensure as much privacy and exclusivity as possible, most areas in which we travel are private concessions in prime locations. All Explorations camps are private and for the use of Wilderness Explorations guests only, while The River Club and air linkages are shared with other guests.
Routes: Zambia to Maun (& vice versa).
Time: We have specifically allowed for a three-night stay at Linyanti Adventurer Camp and on the Xigera Mokoro Trail; in a journey of this nature, guests thus have the time to relax and unwind while at the same time fully appreciating an in-depth introduction to the diversity of the area as well as its activities.
Transfers: To maximize guests' travel time, a variety of transport modes that bring out the best of each area is used including flying in light aircraft and overland transfers in customized 4X4 safari vehicles. 4x4 tracks in certain wilderness areas are not maintained, take time to traverse and may be bumpy at times. As a result some of the road transfers can take a full day with lunch and ample game viewing opportunities en route.
Private safari options: Tailored Explorations are available on flexible dates, accommodation and itineraries, for groups of up to eight guests. These are also ideal for families or for small groups from four guests.
THE WILD KALAHARI: Consider the The Wild Kalahari safari as a recommended add-on to this safari.
The Migration Routes concentrates on the savannah biome. The Wild Kalahari Exploration is an ideal opportunity to experience a very different ecosystem – The Kalahari Desert and links effortlessly after certain Migration Routes departures, adding a three-night stay at Deception Valley, Central Kalahari game Reserve.
In the winter months, the Kalahari is more typically a desert-type system: warm and dry. Game viewing remains productive and moves into the vegetated dunal belt and pan systems surrounding the valleys; a series of ecologically placed waterholes further enhance wildlife viewing. Gemsbok, springbok and blue wildebeest are commonly seen. Predator concentrations can be good and sightings of lions are complemented with some of the best cheetah viewing in Africa. Wild dog and leopard are seen on occasion and black-backed jackal and bat-eared fox also occur. Other mammal possibilities include southern giraffe, steenbok, red hartebeest and the charismatic ground squirrels and meerkats (suricates).

DAY 1; (1 Night)
RIVER CLUB - Livingstone, Zambia Jump
to River Club
All scheduled Migration Routes stay at The River Club except for the 21 July 2012 departure, which is booked at Toka Leya Camp. |
After arrival in Livingstone you will be met by a representative and transferred directly for a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1708 metres (5604 feet) wide, it is the largest curtain of water in the world and drops 103 metres (338 feet) into the basalt depths of the sheer Zambezi Gorge.
The River Club lies dreaming in dappled shade on the Zambian banks of the Zambezi River, 18km (11 miles) upstream from the world-famous Victoria Falls. Its main area is a well-appointed Edwardian-style house, with a comfortable lounge, large dining room, impressive library and wide veranda on which breakfasts and teas are taken. Manicured lawns (where midday meals are often served) spread out beneath the trees and a croquet court is an ideal venue for a Pimm'ssoaked croquet game. The pool has been built to seem part of the river itself and a secluded deck with hammocks and loungers provides respite. Meals can also be enjoyed on occasion in the summer house or gazebo.
Ten luxury thatched chalets overlook the Zambezi River and have en-suite facilities including a bath, shower, toilet and basin. All the rooms have fans and air-conditioning (hot and cold). The rooms are all completely open in the front, giving guests uninterrupted views of the Zambezi.

DAYS 2 - 4; (3 Nights)
Chobe River Boat Cruise, Chobe National
Park and LINYANTI ADVENTURER CAMP - Linyanti Wildlife
Reserve, Botswana (Fully
serviced camping) |
After a full breakfast, we leave Zambia and enter the Chobe National Park in Botswana by way of the Kazungula border, a point where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe meet.
Enjoy a leisurely shaded boat cruise along the Chobe River, with a light lunch. This boat cruise offers a unique opportunity to observe puku, large herds of elephant, numerous pods of hippo and large crocodiles, as well as enjoying fantastic views of other general game and diverse birdlife.
We then depart by road for the Linyanti region. This interesting drive exposes the group to the rural way of life along the northernmost tip of Botswana and also affords views across the Chobe and Linyanti Rivers into Namibia's Caprivi Strip. The last part of the road journey is a game drive as we approach the Linyanti, where our pre-erected Linyanti Adventurer Camp is situated. This part of the Linyanti is famed for its myriad of changing landscapes, from riverine to savannah and from forest to plains.
The Linyanti region's life-giving perennial waters attract herds of wildlife that walk well-worn game paths to slake their thirst in the dry season. Predators follow in their footsteps and, coupled with the area's diversity of habitat, make for exciting game viewing. |
DAYS 5 - 7;
(3 Nights)
KHWAI ADVENTURER CAMP - Khwai Concession, Northeastern
Okavango Delta, Botswana (Fully
serviced camping) |
After breakfast, we drive to the airstrip for light aircraft transfer to Khwai Adventurer Camp.
Khwai Adventurer Camp is located in a private concession just north of the Khwai River above the Moremi Game Reserve. The Khwai Concession is one of the most diverse areas in northern Botswana which seldom disappoints when it comes to producing extraordinary wildlife experiences. The life source for this area is the Khwai River – the northernmost "finger" of the Okavango Delta alluvial fan, which provides vital sustenance to numerous animals.
Over time, the Khwai area has metamorphosed into a wide range of exciting wildlife habitats – some of the most varied to be found in the entire Okavango Delta: a blend of forests, floodplain, wetland and grasslands. The narrow Khwai Channel is home to large mammals such as hippo and crocodile with buffalo and red lechwe often seen grazing along the fringe. The beautiful gallery riverine woodland found along the river provides further sanctuary to birds, primates and leopard. Elusive roan antelope often come to the river to drink. Activities focus around day and night game drives, nature walks and seasonal mokoro excursions.
Away from the river there is a wonderful mix of acacia and leadwood trees of varying sizes that abuts into mopane woodland. The latter, together with the permanent presence of water, attracts large numbers of elephant to the area. Larger predators include lion, wild dog and spotted hyaena, while birdlife found here is just as varied thanks to the colourful palette of habitats. |
DAYS 8 - 9;
(2 Nights)
XIGERA MOKORO TRAILS - Okavango
Delta,
Botswana Jump
to Xigera
Mokoro Trail |
We fly by light aircraft to the water-filled paradise of the remote Xigera area, within the Moremi Game Reserve. Xigera is the ultimate Okavango Delta experience, with serene waters flowing through innumerable channels around remote islands and a profusion of plant and animal birdlife.
There is no better way to experience the Okavango than to travel through it by mokoro and camping out on a vegetated island – all essential elements of the Xigera Mokoro Trails. The experience is aimed at highlighting the permanently flooded inner Delta, in the serene waterways and on the islands of trees and bush.
Mokoro activities enable up-close encounters with an excellent diversity of birdlife (including Pel's Fishing-Owl), frogs and some game species, some specially adapted to water, such as the familiar red lechwe. |
DAY 10
Bid farewell to the adventure as we transfer by light aircraft to Maun Airport.
NOTE: TAILOR-MADE ITINERARY OPTIONS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE ON FLEXIBLE DATES, FOR GROUPS OF UP TO EIGHT GUESTS.
SAFARI NOTES:
• Each departure is guaranteed from
a minimum of 2 confirmed guests, with a maximum of 8 guests
per safari.
• Age Limits – Children from the age of 12 are welcome on all scheduled
departures. For groups with children under 12, we suggest creating a private
tailor-made safari, subject to a different cost. For guests over the age of 75,
a certified medical certificate of full health must be provided.
• Luggage limitation of 20 kgs per person in a soft bag. This limit includes camera equipment and hand luggage. Passengers weighing more than 100kg (220 lbs) must please advise us in advance, as an extra seat will then have to be costed into the package for safety purposes.
• We reserve the right, due to situations beyond our control, to substitute
a lodge or location with another of comparable quality. This will be advised
timeously.
• Due to seasonally fluctuating water levels in the Selinda Spillway, we may need to switch the road transfer from Kasane – Linyanti to a flight and the flight from Linyanti to Lechwe Island to a road transfer. This will not affect the trip or costs in a negative way.
• There is a limitation of 2 single tents per safari, and a maximum number
of 5 tents at any site while on safari. No single supplement is payable. When
there are more than 2 single guests on a safari, we will attempt to match guests
with another guest of the same gender. No triple rooms are accepted.
• Please note that all scheduled Exploration safaris operate with a minimum
of two guests. Should all other bookings on an Exploration cancel or that there
is only a single guest booked, we will convert the booking to an FIT package,
which is in all likelihood subject to a higher price.
• Flashlights/ torches:
Please ensure that a minimum 2-D cell flashlight is brought on safari, with spare
batteries. Head lamps are also useful. Flashlights are not provided.
• Camera
battery charging facilities: Please note that a 12V cigarette lighter adaptor will be required (that is compatible with camera make) on this safari for charging batteries while on game drive or transfer drives. No 110/ 240V outlets are available, except at Mosi Discoverer Camp in Zambia.
• Dietary requirements and special
occasions: Due to remote locality of Adventurer camps, please ensure that full
dietary requirements and special occasions are advised at the time of your booking
confirmation.
• We will have a minimum of 2 - 3 camp assistants in addition to the guide at each camp.
• Our open vehicles are specially designed and extended 4 x 4 Land Rovers or Land Cruisers. They seat eight guests in comfort. The vehicles are designed so that all guests have good all-round visibility (although the rear part of the vehicle is closed to lessen the dust entering the vehicle while driving). The large open window and roof areas offer good visibility and promote photographic opportunities, while at the same time being able to close for seasonal rainy weather en-route. Each vehicle is custom-built to our own standards and includes a fridge and a small field guide book library.
• Please ensure you have a sufficient amount of US Dollars/Euro in cash of small denominations, as it is difficult to get any US$ or Euros within Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. We suggest that you allow US$25 per day to cover the cost of decent basic souvenirs (within reason). For expensive souvenirs allow extra. All domestic departure taxes on charter flights are included in the price of your safari.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• Accommodation on a sharing basis.
• All meals from dinner on Day 1 to the end of the scheduled safari.
