Sussi and Chuma is an enchanting riverbank hideaway
just 10 minutes upstream of the Victoria Falls along the Zambezi
river next to Zambia's Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.
Sussi & Chuma,
named after David Livingstone’s
faithful friends (and who carried his body from the interior to
the British embassy at Dar-es-Salaam), consists of an exclusive,
upmarket lodge which takes full advantage of its lovely river-bank
setting. Resident wildlife, such as hippopotamus and elephant, is likely to wander
through the Lodge grounds at any time, since in the National Park they
have priority. A wide choice of activities adds to the attractions of
this elegant, secluded retreat.
The river here is dotted with
islands and rapids and the gentle rush of the water as it washes
over the rocks
gives a soothing background symphony. Sussi & Chuma is the
ideal destination for those wishing to explore Victoria Falls
and its surrounds. Because of its close proximity to the Mosi-Oa-Tunya
Game Park and the most northerly population of White Rhino, it
is also perfect for those with only a day or two to spare for
a safari.

Guest accommodation consists
of ten generously sized,
luxury tree-houses, built into the living canopy of giant
ebony trees lining the bank of the Zambezi River. Each
unit has a private
view of the river from its own deck among the branches.
Each house has folding doors which open completely
to allow you to lie in your muslin swathed bed and gaze at
the river or to catch the scarlet underwing of a Livingstone
Lourie as it conveniently perches at eye level. The houses
feature large baths and separate showers, deep cane chairs
on the teak veranda, a cotton wrap draped across a white
linen chair, scented candles by the bath, a cooling fan and
a discreet fridge for those private sundowners.
Canopy-level walkways
connect each treehouse to the main bar and lounge. This
thatched structure is also elevated and features a spectacular
raised bar/lounge deck with a perfect view of the river
and the elephant's favorite swimming
hole.
Overhead fans, shady palms and deep armchairs accented
with animal prints make it the ideal viewing platform.
Just below is the illusory wet-lip pool, which appears
to merge with the waters of the Zambezi and the belly laugh
of the hippos.
