SWALA CAMP - TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA
Swala camp is located within Tarangire National Park borders. The park is an easy 115 kms from Arusha on an excellent roads and the camp itself is another 67 kms into the park.
Tarangire is noted for its elephant population and spectacular baobabs of every shape and color.

Nestled in a remote pocket of the Park, Swala is situated in a copse of majestic acacia trees at the edge of the Gurusi wetlands and the unfurling savannah beyond. This section of the park is exceptionally private, with no other camps around.

The stands of ancient baobab trees, large family herds of elephants, prolific bird life and dry season concentrations of wildlife make Tarangire the classic Africa of lore – feted by explorers, immortalized in documentaries and sought after by the discerning traveller. This picturesque safari hideaway is exclusive in the southwestern corner of Tarangire National Park, affording guests private gameviewing, wilderness luxury, and a privileged glimpse of an Africa, untrammelled by tourism.

Swala offers an experience that is both exclusive in its setting and luxurious in its style, the ambience of old, wild Africa with a breathtaking location that defines the safari as surely as the wildlife that inhabits it.

Swala Camp is owned and operated by Sanctuary Lodges.

Swala's nine private, permanent tents feature en-suite bathrooms with showers, complemented by fittings and fixtures crafted from local materials to mirror the understated elegance of the time-honoured safari style. Each tent is attended by a personal butler and all the tents are placed to offer maximum privacy and tranquility. The elevated terraces on the tents are appointed towards the waterhole that attracts wildlife year-round to ensure that your African wildlife experiences do not finish when you leave your vehicle.

The dining area, lounge and library are housed in the main public area, which affords spectacular views from its wooden deck. Meals are taken in the comfortable dining tent, with full silver service, Pan-African cuisine and fine wines adding to the "country house under canvas" ambience.

Swala's accomplished hosts, personal tent attendants, safari guides and Masai askaris that accompany you to your tent at night enhance your stay with their own personalized African affability, professionalism and knowledge.

Electricity: the camp uses inverted electrical energy.

Children of all ages are welcome at Swala. Children up to 2 years are free of charge. Children between 2 & 11 years will be required to share with an adult. A 50% reduction off the adult sharing rate will be given to 1 child per full paying adult. This reduction is only applicable for children up to and including 11 years. A third and fourth child between 2 & 11 years will be required to pay the full adult rate.

Activities & Wildlife
The park’s name is derived from the Tarangire River, the park’s only source of permanent water. In the dry season this river is the lifeline, attracting much of the game. Huge herds of elephant, greater kudu, and fringe-ear Oryx are what the park is synonymous with. In addition, leopard and tree-climbing pythons often inhabit the trees.

Due to the low volume of traffic in the park, the game is “wild" and, being unaccustomed to vehicles, this offers a truly unique experience. Two game viewing drives daily in open-topped 4WD vehicles are included in the package.

Throughout your stay, you will be serenaded by the resident wildlife, including impala (after which the camp is named), waterbuck, lion and various elephant groups. There is even a resident leopard that puts in the occasional guest appearance at the waterhole during dinner.

Climate & Clothing
Tanzania has a tropical climate, which is characterized by warm days and cool evenings. There is no winter here and the coolest months are June to September with average day temperatures of 18C-22C and night temperatures of 8C-15C. The hottest months are October to February with temperatures ranging between 22C-30C during the day and 15C-21C at night.

Clothing should be cool, comfortable & casual all year round. Jerseys and heavier jackets are required in early mornings and evenings. Muted colours are the most suitable on safari and white does reflect the light, creating a glare. We advise long sleeves and long trousers due to the long grasses. Sturdy and comfortable shoes are essential. Laundry services are available.

Conservation and Community
As part of their commitment to this forgotten corner of Tanzania, the staff and management team at Swala have initiated a pioneering community conservation project that has recently led to the building of a school for the children of a village that borders Tarangire. Guests at Swala are offered the privileged opportunity to learn more about these projects and become involved as part of their stay.

Other Considerations
All communication to the camp is relayed via radio. The Camp maintains 24-hour radio contact with the Central Reservations Office in Arusha and all vehicles are equipped with two-way radios. In addition all the tents are equipped with VHF radios to enable guests to contact the management in the event of an emergency. The camp is also equipped with a satellite telephone which guests have access to..

Health: Please consult your doctor and local travel advisor on health requirements for Tanzania. Inoculations for yellow fever are required if arrival is from or through countries where yellow fever is endemic. Malaria also exists in Tanzania and prophylaxis as advised by your doctor is required.
