SOUTH COAST KENYA SAFARI
Kenya's coastline south of Mombasa is a tropical paradise, with palm lined, white sand beaches, the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, and spectacular coral reefs. These off-shore reefs form a protective barrier for the beaches, creating calm water for swimming, snorkeling and water sports. The south coast climate is mostly sunny days, warm, balmy nights, and gentle breezes off the sea.

The offshore reefs are filled with a multitude of fishes, invertibrates, turtles, dolphins and corals. The reefs offer world-class diving, with outer and inner walls that  drop off and are filled with colorful corals. A marine reserve has been established around beautiful Wasini Island at Kisite-Mpunguti, and this area is a lovely day trip for divers and snorkellers.  In February-March each year, there are almost guaranteed sightings of Whale Sharks on outer reef dives along the Kenyan Coast. The East African Whale Shark Trust (EAWST) is located at Dianai Beach.

Inland, the beaches are bordered by coastal rainforests, lush with prolific birdlife, primates including baboons and colobus monkeys and even the elusive leopard.

Diani Beach offers a number of high-end, luxury resorts, while the quieter Tiwi Beach includes smaller, more low-key getaways. The Kwale District to the inland consists of small tribal villages inhabited by the Wakamba, Digo and Duruma peoples.

The small, southern fishing village of Shimoni to the south, has a long standing reputation for big game fishing. The Pemba Channel is the best fishing destination, and there are many highly skilled local operators.

Access to Kenya's south coast is via Mombasa. A vehicular ferry is used to cross the Likoni channel, taking visitors from Mombasa to the south coast.
