A large bull Elephant at Rock Pan - note the elevated ridge where we sat for five hours	James shooting at 420mm overlooking Rock Pan	The Zebras were our first visitors
The zebras were skittish at first but eventually relaxed to our presence	This big bull Elie was a bit intolerant of the Zebras at "his" waterhole	The Zebras stayed on until they had fully quenched their thirst
A stallion and his herd approach the water cautiously	The stallion calls to his mares	The Elephants and Zebras provided us with plenty of entertainment
An Impala ram drinking alongside some Helmeted Guinea fowls	Impalas are always very cautious when drinking	An Impala ram drinking as a Cape Turtle Dove flutters past
Burchell's Zebras drink at least once per day...	...and they are seldom found more than 8km from water	Sounders of Warthogs came to drink, usually approaching at a fast run
A nice herd of Buffalos also visited the waterhole	Buffalos drink up to 30 to 40 litres of water twice a day...	...the herd bulls were the first to drink while the rest were more cautious
One young bull Elephant decided to try to run off the Buffalos...without success	Elephants and Buffalos are highly dependent on water	All of the Elephants were aware of our presence...mostly due to their acute sense of smell
This herd of Elephants approached from far off...	...as they came closer, their pace increased...	...the smell of the fresh water was almost too much to bear...
...finally, they began to run full out, even the little calf...	...this was an amazing scene to witness; notice the trunks held up as they scented us...	...finally they reached the pan and began to drink by filling their trunks and then spraying into their throats
At times there were two herds sharing the waterhole at the same time	Meetings between two distinct family groups are almost always peaceful	It was amazing to see the level of the water drop as the animals consumed it
Most of the Elephants were satisfied that we were not a direct threat to them...	...however, these Elephants approached us from behind, up on the ridge where we sat	Ian Michler photographs a herd after it has visited Rock Pan
