KHWAI RIVER LODGE - OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA
Khwai River Lodge is one of the oldest safari lodges in Botswana, opened in the late 1960's by the late Sir Seretse Khama, the first President of independent Botswana. It is located eight kilometres north-west of the north gate of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. The camp is set under a canopy of old indigenous Leadwood and Fig trees and offers a commanding view of the Khwai River flood plain. This is the perfect location for observing the perennial drama of the African bushveld and provides excellent birding.

Khwai is renowned for its large concentrations of mammals and it is not unusual to see many different types of wildlife from the comfort of your own private deck. As a year-round destination for wildlife, predators can regularly be seen in the area, rated as one of the most prolific in Botswana for viewing wildlife. The exceptional location of Khwai makes it a regular host to Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dogs. Birdlife can also be viewed in abundance, with exceptional sightings of wildfowl and raptors near the lodge. At Khwai River Lodge, you are close to Africa's heartbeat and at the centre of a world that has not altered since life began. You can sense this from the moment you arrive.

Khwai River Lodge is owned and operated by Orient-Express Safaris.

Game Drives
Khwai River Lodge is situated joust outside the Moremi Game Reserve, which is well regarded as one of Africa's finest and most beautiful reserves. It covers an area of untouched wilderness including approximately twenty percent of the Okavango Delta itself. The reserve has a wide diversity of ecosystems but the game here is the principle attraction; Moremi is widely acknowledged as the predator capital of the world.

Elephant and both species of rhinocerous are present along with good herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra. Plenty of antelope such as waterbuck, kudu and red lechwe provide ample opportunity for the vast numbers of predators with large prides of lion, leopard and cheetah regularly spotted on game drives along with resident packs of wildog and hyaena within Moremi.

Bird Watching
This camp is set on the banks of the Khwai river, which during the dry months of the year is the only source of permanent water in the whole area. This area is most famous for its raptor populations - Martial Eagles, Secretary Birds, Bateleurs and a whole host of smaller raptors comprise the main feature of this area.

There are wonderful water birds to be found along the Khwai river and the river is fairly open, allowing for easy birding. Birds to look out for are Purple Gallinule, Saddle-billed Stork, Black Stork, Kingfishers, Slaty Egret and a whole host of little waders. The surrounding woodland comprises mainly of Mopane and there are a number of birds to look out for here; a big special for the area is the Arnot's Chat and Hartlub's Babblers.

A trip up to Xaxanaxa ("kakanika") Lagoon is also a worthwhile excursion, as this takes you up onto part of the permanent swamp. Khwai boasts over 300 species and is well worth the trip.

Spa Treatments
Indulge in a spa treatment in the magnificent surroundings of the Okavango Delta. Feel at one with nature as our experts use a selection of naturally wild products to sooth and relax you after a day filled with exciting activity.

Wildlife
The Khwai River is part of the Okavango Delta's system. But the lodge lies at the point where the river narrows to a stream and disappears into the sand and here you find Moremi, one of Africa's most majestic game reserves.

Moremi roars with Botswana's largest, grandest, fastest, sleekest and most beautiful game. Waterbuck, Crocodile and Hippo abound. Vast herds of antelope and Zebra graze contentedly on the coarse grass. And where the antelope feed, the predators are not too far off: Lion, Leopard and Cheetah, Hyena and Wild Dog.

Within the Khwai River region one is also able to notch up numerous bird sightings. It is especially the high population density of raptors that is very impressive. Birds such as the Bateleur Eagle, Tawny Eagle, African Fish-eagle and Brown Snake-eagle all being well represented.
