Khwai River Lodge
KHWAI RIVER LODGE - OKAVANGO
DELTA, BOTSWANA
Khwai River Lodge is one of the oldest safari lodges
in Botswana, opened in the late 1960's by the late Sir Seretse Khama,
the first President of independent Botswana. It is located
eight kilometres north-west of the north gate of the Moremi Wildlife
Reserve. The camp is set under a canopy of old indigenous Leadwood and
Fig trees and offers a commanding view of the Khwai River flood plain.
This is the perfect location for observing the perennial drama of the
African bushveld and provides excellent birding.
At Khwai River Lodge, you are close to
Africa's heartbeat and at the center of a world that has not altered
since life began. You can sense this from the moment you arrive. Bush
hats and desert
boots, tall tales and long drinks, a past redolent of trophies and potent
sundowners. Upon entering our Khwai River Lodge,
you immediately sense its big game heritage. For decades, as befits
one of the most established game lodges in Botswana, it has hosted
guests from all over the world on the safari trail.
Khwai River Lodge is owned and
operated by Orient Express Safaris.

Wildlife
The Khwai River is part of the Okavango Delta's system.
But the lodge lies at the point where the river narrows to a stream and
disappears into the sand and here you find Moremi, one of Africa's most
majestic game reserves.
Moremi roars with Botswana's largest,
grandest, fastest, sleekest and most beautiful game. Waterbuck, Crocodile
and Hippo abound. Vast herds
of antelope and Zebra graze contentedly on the coarse grass. And where
the antelope feed, the predators are not too far off: Lion, Leopard
and Cheetah, Hyena and Wild Dog.
Within the Khwai
River region one is also able to notch up numerous bird sightings.
It is especially the high population density of raptors
that is very impressive. Birds such as the Bateleur Eagle, Tawny Eagle,
African Fish Eagle and Brown Snake Eagle all being well represented.
